Mr. Fender then went on to create some of the finest musical amplifiers the world has ever seen. That power supply design worked great, for a while. But consumer safety regulations from the '70s, changing characteristics of modern components and the popularity of transistors began to seriously compromise that vintage sound. Regulations and technology advanced, but the guitar amplifier's power supply did not. Amazingly, every guitar and bass amplifier made today still uses that same basic power supply design. Amplifier manufacturers do a fairly decent job masking the weaknesses of that design with every kind of preamp distortion you can imagine. From trans to flex, to dual to custom-made-for-you. Yet, they simply can't make preamp distortion sound or feel anything like power amp distortion. The result? Everybody wants a vintage amp. Those who don't go for high quality boutique amps. But, vintage amps are old, and boutique amps still use that same basic 50-year-old power supply design. Quality parts, individually matched tubes and the finest cabinetry available just doesn't cut it when the power supply was designed for 50-year-old parts and 50-year-old safety regulations. Some players might even tell you that they prefer preamp distortion over power amp distortion. Sadly, these guitarists haven't experienced the dimensions of feel and control when power amp distortion is combined with preamp distortion. This knob allows you to overdrive the power amp at whatever volume level is appropriate for the venue you are in. Wattage control is not a Master Volume control or other preamp gimmick, nor is it an outboard control like a Variac. Wattage control is actual control over the power amp. Wattage control also allows you to adjust the mix between the level of power amp distortion and the level of speaker distortion.
