The PAF's that are very hot. Like Jimmy Page's guitar during the Led Zepplin era, or Eddie Van Halen's pickups on the first couple of albums. Or the cleaner tone, less "warm" pickups preferred by hard rockers, using more amp distortion. Lots of people are going on specs only. 8k, 9k etc. This is a pretty good beginning point, but of course you need to know that magnet material would change this completely. Alnico 2 and Alnico 5 sound different, ceramic magnets sound different, brass pickup frames sound drastically different from iron/steel pickup frames (a change in impedance due to a change in magnet material within the pickup.) So - for a hot PAF Lindy Fralin 8.5 or 9k humbuckers, and the great SEYMOUR DUNCAN PEARLY GATES (a super favorite for years. The Pearly Gates is part of the Duncan "underground" series of ultra high quality pickups. It really "hits the mark" on the Billy Gibbons tone and other famous vintage Les Pauls) The hopped up DiMarzio PAF Pro is a good excursion into MORE gain, still retaining good clean tonality. The real hot ones are the DUNCAN CUSTOM and the Rio Grand BBQ bucker - kind of an exaggerated ultra-hot "real thing." A great cleaner, more defined tone is the Seymor Duncan '59 model, Duncan Alnico Pro II, Lindy Fralin 8k models, the Van Zandt Truebucker and the Rio Grande Texas Humbucker -which have all become some of my favorites with the Torres Super Texan amp or DM-2000 amps.
