Marty Interview by A. Lee Graham Not that many Megadeth fans know you already had legions of fans before meeting Dave Mustaine. Tell us about how Cacophony formed? M:It formed after I decided to do a solo record. I had all the materials together and was about to go into the studio. Mike Varney was running a guitar label (Shrapnel) at the time, and had received a tape from Jason Becker and said I should listen to this kid. I did and he was good, but I wasn't blown away. So Varney said, 'Why don't you guys get together and jam?' I said, 'No, I'm too busy.' But he insisted, so Jason came over to my apartment and he was absolutely the greatest guy. He didn't have a whole lot of experience, but you could tell he was great. He was one of those guys you hate because he could play anything. I thought if we formed this intense band, we could do some real sick guitar stuff. I thought, 'Let's just blow off my solo record and let's record this band project.' Did you intend to compose more Cacophony material after Go Off!? Or were those plans doomed by Jason's news that he had ALS? M:Not at all. That was way after Jason and I left Cacophony. He was already deeply into David Lee Roth's band at the time. Cacophony just didn't have the financial (means) to go on. Can you recall the exact moment Jason dropped the bad news? What was your reaction? M:There wasn't really an exact moment. It was weird. We were both getting into our new bands: Jason with David Lee Roth, me with Megadeth. We were both living in Hollywood and jamming. I had a problem with my arm while recording Rust In Peace. At the time, Jason complained that his leg was feeling numb. We went to Denny's on Sunset (Boulevard) and commiserated that it was fucked up that we got these great gigs and his leg was getting number and number. As it turned out, I got better and Jason got ALS, which was a terrible, terrible blow because we had achieved what we wanted. Playing as professional musicians is what we wanted to do from the start. It really, really hurt to watch what happened to Jason. Jason's still composing music, despite his disability. Any chance of you and he collaborating in the future? M:The closest we've come to collaborating was his releasing a bunch of demos. The Raspberry Jams? M:Yeah, and I layed down some tribute records for Jason, too. I really pray we can one day collaborate. This past year, I was in San Francisco and played a piece of his music with an orchestra (the San Francisco Community Center Orchestra And Chorus). Was it "Air?" (from Becker's Perpetual Burn album) M:No, it was "End Of The Beginning" off Perspectives. It was a challenge playing it in front of Jason.
